Since founding Marshall Watson Interiors in New York City in 1985, Mr. Watson has developed a well-deserved reputation as one of America’s most respected design industry leaders, garnering accolades from both his peers and clients as well as from many nationally known design publications. His firm has executed projects throughout the U.S. as well as in London, Mexico, Sweden, and Tokyo.
Originally from Kansas City, Watson received a B.A. in Design from Stanford University. After studying scenic design at Brandeis University, he received an M.F.A. from San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theatre. Upon receiving his degrees, he enjoyed an acting career in television as well as on Broadway and in various regional theaters. His original love of design lured him back – to study interior design at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology, eventually leading to the start of MWI.
The Marshall Watson Collection, available nationally through Edward Ferrell + Lewis Mittman, Inc., features furniture designs inspired by French men’s club furnishings of the 1930’s and 1940’s as well as a grouping inspired by Italy’s Lake Como region. Pieces from the collection have been featured in Architectural Digest, Metropolitan Home, Veranda and Traditional Home.
Charitable work is important to Watson, having participated in decorator showhouses throughout the New York region, as well as various fund-raisers and home tours to benefit The Irvington Institute, The Abigail Adams Smith Museum, The Make-A-Wish Foundation, Cerebral Palsy of New York, The Junior League of New York and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. He has served on the board of the Isabel O’Neil Foundation for the Painted Finish. The City-As-School Program, a division of the New York Public School system, has honored him for his work mentoring students.
Mr. Watson has become a sought-after lecturer, appearing throughout the U.S. speaking on color, antiques and design in the home. Additionally, his firm’s work has been featured in several home design books – and he is currently at work on his own book, a retrospective of his design accomplishments.
With an eye for understated elegance, an ear for our clients' needs and a feeling for comfort, our firm creates innovative solutions for both traditional and contemporary interiors. We believe in furniture that feels as good as it looks and that is designed to last. We insist on excellent craftsmanship, working in conjunction with only the finest drapery workrooms, cabinetmakers, lighting designers, upholsterers and restorers. We have developed a studio of remarkable decorative artists ranging from glazers and gilders to muralists, faux finishers and stencilers.
Our insistence on rooms that make architectural sense has led us to establish truly inspired collaborations with architects and contractors. Sensitivity to lighting infuses our rooms with dramatic flair as well as providing the comfort of suitable task illumination. We are known for an excellent sense of color, pattern and texture. We take pride in every design project we produce, working closely with our clients, encouraging them to express their individual visions. We celebrate rooms that are not only beautiful, but playful, uplifting, dramatic and above all, personal.
We take pride in being able to handle any and all aspects of residential design, from the ground up. This includes exterior and interior architectural work, both new construction and renovation. We are happy to assist our clients from beginning to end, from preliminary construction meetings to furniture, fabric and color selections, to finding artwork and accessories, to finally specifying bed and bath linens, china and flatware. Our projects range from three rooms to entire houses – we particularly enjoy vacation and weekend homes.
